A beautiful Jacobite artifact with excellent provenance.
A wax profile of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart, 1720–1788), sold in 1996 by Christie’s during a specialized auction titled “The Jacobite Sale, Christie’s Scotland”
The Jacobites were supporters of the Stuarts and fought to restore them to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
They were supported by the French monarchy. The final Jacobite battle, led with panache by Bonnie Prince Charlie, was fought and lost at Culloden in 1746.
This beautiful profile depicts the prince wearing the Order of the Garter, a wig, and a jabot. The pattern of his tartan is clearly visible.
An elegant use of color highlights the white of his jabot and a slight rosy hue on his lips and cheeks.
The delicacy of the carving suggests a date toward the end of the 18th century, when Jacobite objects began to take on a gently nostalgic quality.
The profile is set against a black background.
