Henri Pailler, “the Shed,” Poitiers, 1899 — Post-impressionism — Crozant School
A superb view from the darkness of an undergrowth sheltering a pond and a shed looking out toward an open clearing, depicted as a burst of golden-brown hues bathed in the light of the setting sun.
This beautiful late-19th-century Post-Impressionist composition is by the painter Henri Pailler, born on June 3, 1876, in Poitiers and died on January 20, 1954, in Triel-sur-Seine.
From childhood, he showed an aptitude for drawing.
Of modest origins, he began working at the age of ten in the studio of a decorative painter, where he was noticed by Edmond Petitjean, who secured a scholarship for him.
Pailler left Poitiers for the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Léon Bonnat.
Unlike his teacher, Pailler was less drawn to portraiture than to landscape painting, and he gravitated toward Armand Guillaumin, whose Impressionist style appealed to him as much as the vividness of his palette.
In 1901, Guillaumin took his young student to the Creuse region, introducing him to his landscapes and to painting from life.
Henri was a painter of history and landscapes associated with the “School of Crozant.”
He will exhibit at various Parisian Salons.
Works held in the museums of Poitiers, Dijon, Orléans, Limoges, and Philadelphia.
