This charming seascape depicts a scene of daily life in the Mediterranean. In the foreground, a lateen-rigged boat sails on calm, silvery waters. On board, two sailors prepare their meal on a brazier placed between them, from which a light smoke rises, dissolving into the misty atmosphere.
The delicate and atmospheric composition demonstrates a particular sensitivity to the rendering of light and the subtle nuances of the cloud-laden sky. In the background, other boats dot the sea horizon, while a coastline is discreetly outlined on the left.
The brushwork is fluid and lively, characteristic of marine painting at the turn of the century. The artist has perfectly captured the peaceful atmosphere of a moment at sea, a time between work and rest.
The artist could not be definitively identified. However, the canvas comes from Montpellier, and the Matte family was a prominent family in this Mediterranean city. It is therefore possible that the artist was one of its members.
The work has been cleaned and restored and is now in good condition. Several restorations are visible on the reverse of the canvas. The work nevertheless retains all its evocative power.
