Jean-Louis Paguenaud, born June 30 1876 in Coussac-Bonneval (Haute-Vienne), and died May 31, 1952 in Limoges (Haute-Vienne), was a painter of seascapes and exotic landscapes created during his many long-haul voyages, as well as landscapes of the Basque country and Biarritz, where he lived from 1899 to 1911.
Biography:
Jean Paguenaud spent part of his childhood in Algiers before his father, a gendarme, was transferred to Limoges. There, he attended the École d'Arts Décoratifs while working as a painter in a porcelain factory. He then studied with William Bouguereau in Bordeaux, before settling in Biarritz in 1899, where he gave painting and drawing lessons. The sea was the main subjectof his paintings. His studio in Biarritz had a loyal Anglo-Saxon clientele. He married in Cambo-les-Bains in 1909. His brother-in-law, Count Sobanski, owner of the yacht, "La Triomphante", took him on board and showed him the African coast. His Orientalist-inspired paintings were exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français and in a gallery on rue La Boétie, in Paris, where he moved in 1911. Unfortunately, war broke out in 1914. He was mobilized. As an ambulance driver on the front line, he treated wounded and epidemics, and it was there that he contracted an illness ande was evacuated to Limoges, where his family lived. On learning of the death of his brother Louis, an officer, on September 11, 1914, he added his first name to his own. Appointed Official Paintre de la Marine in 1922, his travels resumed: Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Paul Valéry, whom he met on one of these missions, said of him: "Paguenaud, the admiral of painters and the painter of admirals". Indeed, he was appreciated by all admirals. From this period the great seascapes depicting warships on stormy seas, with such accuracy that sailors immediately recognized units and maneuvers. For the Exposition of 1937, he decorated the French Navy's pavilion, and settled in Paris, in a houseboat (a rarity in those days) which he christened "La Provence". Shortly afterwards, he became the French attaché in charge of maritime affairs for the ex-Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, on his yacht "Nimet Allah II", aboard which he sailed the Mediterranean. In 1939, he was commissioned to disarm the yacht. He returned to Limoges at 19 rue Jean-Jaurès, which was to be his final resting place. He decorated the information station in Limoges, in 1948. His last major work was the decoration of the Ecole de Santé Navale in Bordeaux.
