Jean Marquerie was an important but little-known artist of the Tarbes school of painting, which emerged under the guidance of Henri Borde, of whom he was one of the first disciples and friends. A figurative painter, Borde’s influences are evident in his works. However, his artistic style gradually evolved into a realistic expressionism. He employs rather dark and muted colors. Occasionally ,brighter and more vivid tones emerge from his palette. His landscapes are constructed with broad perspectives, bordering on distortion, yet always maintaining an overall balance. Resistant to the abstraction of the 1950s, his work has always straddled the line between classical tradition and modernity. He often depicted the Hautes-Pyrénées and the Southwest, but also left behind a series of portraits of painters of his generation, as well as historical paintings and still lifes.
