Biography:
Émile Charles Appay was born on June 2, 1876 in Saint-Just (Eure) and died on October 7, 1935 in Vaux-sur-Seine. He grew up in Paris, where his father was a lithographer and printer which brought him into early contact with the visual arts. A student of Henri-Joseph Harpignies and Paul Lecomte, he befriended André Derain. He exhibited at theSalon des Artistes Français from 1910 to 1920, as well as in Parisian galleries such as Georges Petit and Jules Gautier. Enlisted in the First World Wa, Appay created drawings of frontline areas, notably in Picardy. From 1922 to 1932, he traveled throughout Europe, working on sets for the Georges Pitoëff theater company.
Style and influences:Appay specialized in scenes of limpid landscapes, whether urban, coastal or mountainous, coastal or mountain, mainly in watercolor. His plein-air approaches the tradition of Harpignies, with a luminous, atmospheric rendering. His recurring subjects - Mediterranean ports (Marseille,Toulon), valleys and mountains (Seine, Corsica, Alps, Pyrenees), industrial scenes - underline his interest in southern and the rural world. His delicate palette and fluid brushstrokes place his works between poetic realism and discreet impressionism.
