Le jardin public de Bordeaux" (1914-1915)
Oil on cardboard
Workshop stamp on back with inventory number: 1008
Dimensions unframed: 27 x 45 cm
Moved to Paris in 1913 to perfect his painting skills, Georges de Sonneville shared a studio on rue Campagne-Première with Edouard Goerg and studied with Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier at the Académie Ranson. This Parisian short-lived, as in the summer of 1914, Sonneville was mobilized to Bordeaux, in the offices of the Gironde prefecture, where he made friends with André Lhote - who had already made a name for himself with his participation in Cubist circles. If thedrawings produced by our artist are imbued with Lhote's graphic rigor, it's a different story for the pochades he paints in oil on cardboard his way. Under influenced by Maurice Denis, he tried his hand at studies with synthetic forms, with slightly shifted colors, in the spirit of the Nabis. Often in small formats, he depicts the Port de la Lune, the Jardin Public and popular or intimate scenes. In larger formats, he attempted to reconcile Cubist construction with Fauvist or Nabis colors. The works from this experimental period, which lasted only three or four years, are among the most poetic and inspired of his output. They are also the rarest and most searched. Already our Public Garden, with its colorful burst of flowers and foliage, the schematization of its forms (as in the background the Rue d'Aviau facades), represents one of the finest examples of this vein, as well as an important milestone for Bordeaux's modernity.
