André LAGRANGE (Paris 1889 – Arcueil 1958) “View of the Calanques of Piana - Corsica” - 1921 Oil on panel signed and dated lower right H: 24 cm x W: 33 cm Biography of the artist: André Lagrange, born September 14, 1889 in Paris and died September 15, 1958 in Arcueil, is a French painter. A student of Fernand Cormon, Martial Hupé and Auguste Bertrand-Perrony at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1910. Engaged in the fighting of the First World War, he emerged with citations and medals. He also produced the work appearing on the Verdun combatant certificate issued by the National Federation of Verdun Veterans Associations. In 1953, he created the illustrations for the edition of Ceux de 14 written by Maurice Genevoix and published by Durassié. He competed for the Prix de Rome in 1919, 1920 and 1922, won the Rosa-Bonheur Prize in 1924, the Eugène-Thirion Prize in 1925 and the Jean-Jacques-Henner Prize in 1927. About the Calanques de Piana: The Calanques de Piana (in Corsican calanche di Piana) are made up of a rocky group, peaks, mineral sculptures, needles and red granite cliffs. They overlook the sea on the southern shore of the Gulf of Porto, halfway between Ajaccio and Calvi.
