Perico Ribera or Pierre Ribera, born on December 2 December 1867 in Lisbon, naturalized1916 and died in Ciboure in 1949, was a French-Spanish painter. A pupil of Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan, he enjoyed an international career. A social artist, portraitist, the author of numerous Hispanic scenes and a representative of the Basque regionalist movement.

This picture was probably painted on the meadow at the back of the family home on the Quai de la Nivelle in Ciboure, named "Perico Baïta" (Chalet Perico).

Extract from "Un siècle de peinture au Pays basque" by Alexandre Hurel and Michel de Jaureguiberry :
Ribera, Un dandy à Ciboure
A major player in the Group of Nine, he was an accomplished dandy, coupled with an insatiable traveler. Spanish by birth, the only son of wealthy Francophile parents who encouraged him to move to France. He was attracted to painting, but never imagined devoting his life to it. His career path through the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Léon Bonnat, and through his participation in the capital's salons. In 1900, he produced the famous Fandango, the Basque museum's emblematic painting, of which he did a large number of replicas.
From 1920 onwards, Ribera regularly visited Ciboure, where he enjoyed the atmosphere, the artistic and the wild parties where he mingled with the gotha. In 1923, he joined the "Group of Nine" in Saint Jean de Luz: Ramiro Arrue, René Maxime Choquet, Charles Colin, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Henri Godbarge, Pierre Labrouche, Georges Masson, Raymond Virac. Ribera was also a tireless traveler, criss crossing the globe from China to Argentina, Japan, Brazil and Morocco. He settled permanently in Ciboure in 1930, where he died in 1949. His globe-trotting career explains why his works can be found in all four corners of the world: the ceiling of the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires and the dining room of the Grand Hotel in Beijing were painted by him.
