Hélène RIVIERE (Toulouse 1896 – Toulouse 1977) “Landscape of the Pyrénées-Orientales - Presumed view of Saint-Paul de Fenouillet” Oil on canvas signed lower right and dated 1926 Dimensions: 43 x 61 cm Bio: Hélène Rivière, born January 28, 1896 in Toulouse where she died on September 17, 1977, is a French painter influenced by Henri Martin. Hélène Rivière is the daughter of the sculptor Jean Rivière, professor of ornamental sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, he trained the brothers Alet and Henry Parayre. Her mother, Pauline Rivière, is an embroiderer and receives a prize for her art. From 1920, Hélène Rivière chooses to exhibit her works through the Society of Southern Artists. When it was decided to divide the exhibitors into several groups, she became a member with her mother. From 1926 to 1940, she exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1935, she won the gold medal at this salon for her work La Glousse. In 1937, she received the Rosa-Bonheur Prize for La gaveuse d'oies. Under the influence of Henri Martin (who was also her godfather), her painting initially focused on landscapes and then moved towards the representation of flowers and the farmyard. Henri Martin followed her closely and was very present at the death of her father. In 1939, Hélène Rivière mentioned in an article the friendship between her father and Henri Martin. She exhibited every year at the Chappe-Lautier gallery, but this did not allow her to make a living, so she gave drawing classes at the Toulouse girls' teacher training college. She also became a professor at the Toulouse Fine Arts School. Public collections: Museum of the Pays de Cocagne, Lavaur, Museum of Fine Arts of Gaillac, Museum of the Augustins, Toulouse
