Joseph-Victor Communal, born 11 February 1876 in Le Châtelard-en-Bauges and died November 26, 1962 in Chambéry, was a French painter, member of the Société des peintres de montagne (SPM). The son of a road-mender, he moved to Chambéry and joined the Ponts et Chaussées at the age of 18 after obtaining his primary school leaving certificate. He then began to paint regularly in his spare time. He had several children, including a son born in 1911 named Jean Ernest Communal, who, like his father, practiced oil painting, but more abstract landscapes. Among the tributes paid to Joseph Communal is the existence of a rue Joseph Communal in the commune of Le Châtelard in Savoie. His training was self-taught.  Later, he would acknowledge Ferdinand Hodler and Giovanni Segantini as his masters, artists with whom he was not familiar in his early years. In 1902, he joined the Union Artistique de Savoie. In 1907 and 1909, he won the Fondation Guy painting competition, a prize he shared with Laurence Millet. In 1910, he was admitted as a "corresponding" of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Savoie. In 1910, he exhibited Un soir d'automne en Savoie (pastel) no. 756 at the Salon de l'école française in Paris; this was to be his only participation in this Salon. He also exhibits, and more faithfully, at the Salon des artistes français. His first submission was for the 1910 Salon, and was awarded an honorable mention. He received a 3rd class medal in 1912, then the gold medal, and was classified hors concours. His works exhibited at the Salon include Les Monts des Charmettes (no. 503) in 1910 and La Meije et le lac Léris (no. 503) in 1914.His first major solo show took place in Paris in 1912, at the Galerie Georges Petit (60 paintings, 18 pastels). He becomes a member of Société des peintres de montagne in 1913.  In 1920, he received the Albert Metzger medal for his work. He became a member of the SNBA in 1921. He also exhibited at the Salon des indépendants in 1928. He returned to the Salon des artistes français in 1929 with Les Fontanettes, Pralognan, and L'église de Montagnole. His career was launched and he devoted himself entirely to painting. Painting mainly in Savoie, Switzerland and the Dauphiné, he became the most famous mountain painter of his time, and is considered the representative of the Impressionist movement in mountain painting. Communal also travelled in the South-West and in the Pyrenees, and we know of a few rare Pyrenean mountains, as well as Landes and Biarritz paintings. He paints with a knife, in broad flat tints, perfectly depicting the mountainous relief, sometimes revealing the underlying support (usually a wooden panel). He paintedAlpine landscapes, with the mountain in the background, as well as views of the high mountains, as if taken through a telephoto lens, but also pastoral scenes or floral compositions. He exhibits in Paris (Charpentier, Georges Petit, Simonson galleries), in Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille, ... and also abroad: Belgium, Switzerland, United States, etc. His paintings are exhibited in numerous museums in France and abroad, notably in Chambéry and Lyon; retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held in Aix-les-Bains (1965 and 1994), Chambéry (1968) and Sallanches for a retrospective organized by the Société des peintres de montagne (2000).
