"Rock in Marseille"
Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard,
Signed lower left,
Countersigned and titled on the back by the artist in a somewhat illegible manner: "R. Ponson - Rock in Marseille",
A beautiful work by one of the major figures of the Marseilles School, Raphael Ponson, depicting a view of the harbor of Marseilles from a rock on the coast, enlivened by a sailboat in the background.
The artist has brilliantly rendered the waves breaking on the beach rocks, as well as the interplay of light and the creamy sky of early morning.
A student of Emile Loubon at the Marseilles School of Fine Arts, Raphael Ponson moved to Paris in 1855. He frequented the Louvre and earned a living by painting fans. After a stay in Italy, he settled permanently in Marseille.
He participated in numerous exhibitions in his region and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1861.
He primarily presented seascapes, which were praised by critics and received numerous awards.
The artist strove to represent the calanques, beaches, and shores around Marseille faithfully and sincerely, with precise brushstrokes.
His works are held in many museums in France: Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Avignon, Cassis, Narbonne, Dijon, etc.
Dimensions: 27.5 x 30.5 cm unframed and 44 x 47 cm with its modern black and gold wooden frame.
