Verena Loewensberg (1912-1986) - "Four variations around a square", 19804 color serigraphs - Exemplaire 14/50 - Signed and dated by hand - Catalogue raisonné Coray 44.1-44.4

Verena Loewensberg is one of the central figures in the Zurich circle of concrete art - alongside Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse and Camille Graeser, she helped forge one of the most decisive currents of 20th-century European geometric abstraction. Her works can be found in the most important international museums and collections.

The present multiple "Quatre variations autour d'un carré", dated 1980, is a complete set of four color serigraphs on vellum and one of Loewensberg's most characteristic graphic works. The four sheets develop the same fundamental motif - the square in gray - through a systematic variation in color, scale, density and arrangement of small squares colored in red, blue, turquoise, yellow and black. No two sheets resemble one another, yet all four form an indissociable conceptual unity: serial variation as an artistic principle, made visible with absolute precision and economy of means.

The work is an exemplary illustration of Loewensberg's method: mathematical rigor that nevertheless acts on the senses. The subtle tension between static basic form and rhythmically animated colored elements is the hallmark of his mature work. As a screen-printed multiple, the Four Leaves offer rare, direct access to this pictorial language - and thus provide an affordable entry into a collecting position that is steadily gaining in importance on the international art market.

The four sheets are hand-signed, dated "80" and numbered 14/50 lower right. The edition, limited to 50 copies, is modest; complete sets are rarely available on the market. In the specialized trade, prices naturally reflect this rarity.
