Kilim Hakkari - Anatolia. Circa 1880. 238x 168 Cm
Everything about this kilim from Hakkari in the far east of Anatolia is exceptional. From this region of production, you'd expect nothing less than excellence in every respect. The Kurdish people of the region are well known for their dexterity, the minute precision of their weaving and a selection of hues of unrivalled purity. The wool is hand-spun, of remarkable quality, and the warp is found in the resiliently braided bangs like a signature.
The weaving is goldsmith's work, with the precision of a watchmaker. The piece is supple and extraordinarily robust. It was made to last. Similarly, the dense, saturated hues have a durability that can be measured over centuries. The ancestral processes used have now almost completely disappeared, creating hues as deep as they are luminous in a perfect harmony, recognizable among a thousand.
On a field organized in successive horizontal bands in hues of indigo midnight blue and madder red, we see appearing like sparkling diamonds small S-shaped motifs, hooks that evoke protection.
In a near-miraculous state of preservation, a sparkling kilim, a work of art as well as a highly decorative, referenced piece.
