Montelupo Majolica Plate – Early 17th Century
Artist: Montelupo Fiorentino (toscane), Début Du Xviie Siècle (vers 1600–1620)
Montelupo Fiorentino (Tuscany), Early 17th century (ca. 1600–1620)
Table plate / sideboard plate
Tin-glazed majolica with polychrome high-fire decoration, Ø 32.5 cm x H 7 cm
Important Montelupo majolica plate characterized by a lively and spontaneous decoration on a white background. The rim is adorned with a central motif of stylized racemes and fruits, rendered with loose, cursive brushstrokes typical of Montelupo production in the early decades of the 17th century. The plant elements unfold around a central axis with a fluid flow, creating a dynamic and highly decorative composition.
The rim is defined by polychrome concentric bands in shades of yellow and blue, interspersed with rapid linear brushstrokes that lend rhythm to the whole.
The color palette—copper green, orange, yellow, and blue—and the free-flowing brushwork evoke the popular yet refined decorative styles of Montelupo’s production, intended for both daily use and the decoration of household sideboards.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries, Montelupo Fiorentino was one of the main production centers of Italian majolica, with its wares widely distributed throughout the peninsula and the Mediterranean.
In the early 17th century, production evolved toward more rapid and stylized decorations, often characterized by fantastical plant motifs executed with great pictorial freedom. This plate fits perfectly into this context, representing an authentic and significant example of high-quality functional ceramics from the period.
Condition:
Good overall condition for its age. Wear and abrasions on the glaze, small chips and missing pieces along the rim, signs of aging consistent with the artifact’s antiquity.
