Notes:The long red figure represents the sun disk, a legend says its origin dates back to when the Mongols threatened to invade Japan in the 13th century. The Buddhist priest Nichiren is said to have offered a sun disk to the Emperor, considered thedescendant of Amaterasu the sun goddess. We don't know when this symbol was first used, but it appears in battle paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, for example, and is known to have been flown under the shogunate in the 17th century, on ships as a flag.
