Notes: The Gongen of Mount Atago is a spiritual figure arising from the syncretism of Buddhism and Shintoism in Japan. The term Gongen refers to a Japanese deity considered a local manifestation of a Buddha, who came to protect humans in an accessible form.
Associated with Mount Atago, this Gongen is particularly revered as a protector against fires. For centuries, locals have prayed to this deity to protect their homes and villages from fire, a major danger in traditional Japanese towns.
The cult of Mount Atago’s Gongen has spread throughout Japan, particularly through talismans (ofuda) placed in homes. Even today, it symbolizes protection, vigilance, and the safety of the home.
