Large Tengu mask carved from wood, lacquered in red and gold.
The matte black lacquered reverse side reveals tool marks.
In very good overall condition; particularly decorative.

Notes: The tengu is a supernatural creature from Japanese folklore, traditionally depicted as a humanoid being with wings, a red face, and an excessively elongated nose. Associated with mountains and forests, it is considered a powerful spirit, both protective and fearsome.
Tengu are notably linked to the ascetic practices of mountain hermits (yamabushi) and to certain traditions of esoteric Buddhism.
In folk tales, they are renowned for their mastery of martial arts and their ability to lead travelers astray or put them to the test.
