Tibet, First Half Of The 20th Century, Polychrome Boiled Carton Mask Depicting Mahakala.
Tibet, first half of the 20th century, superb and unusual polychrome papier-mâché mask depicting Mahakala, a protective deity in Buddhism and also one of the names of Shiva in Hinduism. His grimacing face displays an angry attitude to ward off evil. He wears a crown adorned with five citipati heads, and his third eye, the eye of knowledge, adorns his forehead. The colors are superb and harmoniously arranged. A fragment of a wax seal on the reverse of the piece attests that this mask left Tibetan soil with the agreement of the relevant authorities. Dimensions: Height 17.3 x Width 14 cm. The scale reference in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a well-known brand. Good condition considering its age, apart from wear to the glaze due to rubbing and handling. There are also age-related cracks. All this without compromising the beautiful aesthetics. We take special care with our packaging, using optimal protection. Shipping includes insurance.
