Notes: Shishi (獅子), guardian lions of Chinese origin introduced to Japan with Buddhism, are traditionally placed in pairs at the entrances to temples, shrines, and residences. Their purpose is to protect the site from harmful influences and malevolent spirits. Generally depicted in a dynamic pose, one opens its mouth while the other keeps it closed, forming the A-un pair, a symbol of duality and of the beginning and the end.
