"Japanese Katana Sword, Shirasaya Mounted Blade, With Nbthk Certificate - Late Edo."
JAPAN - Late Edo (Shin-Shin-To period). Samurai Katana. FUSHI - KASHIRA in patinated copper decorated with parallel oblique striations. TSUKA in wood covered with ray skin, braided with blue silk. MENUKIS in finely chiseled copper depicting lobsters. TSUBA in wrought iron in tashi form combining the Choji and Karakusa motifs whose association signifies prosperity and longevity, it is engraved with leafy scrolls. SAYA in wood covered with a textured black lacquer. HABAKI in gilded copper engraved in high relief with the mon of the Tokugawa clan. Straight blade, regular hamon, straight and well marked, the tang pierced once, signed KANETOSHI. Sold with the stand, its silk case for transport and its NBTHK certificate. NBTHK also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Sword Japanese Art Museum), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraisal organizations in modern Japan. Notes: The first-generation Kanetoshi is said to be an apprentice of Kaneuji, also known as Shizu Saburo Kanuji (志津三郎兼氏), who laid the province's foundation for prosperity as one of the most famous swordsmithing sites, along with Kinju, one of the most renowned swordsmiths in Mino Province. At the end of the Kamakura period (early 14th century), Kaneuji moved from Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) to Shizu Village in Mino Province and founded the Naoe School, one of the most prestigious schools in that region. He is known as one of the Masamune Jittesu, one of the ten apprentices of Masamune, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Japanese history.
