Sahai, Samurai Command Staff - Edo Period (1603-1868).
JAPAN - Edo Period (1603-1868). Samurai sahai. Command staff made of lacquered wood (minor losses) and paper, with silver tips decorated with hearts (shaped like a boar's pupil, a symbol of courage). Braided yellow silk wrist strap. Handle length: 36.5 cm. Notes: A saihai is a staff carried by samurai commanders from the feudal period of Japan onward. It is a sign of rank and a signaling instrument; indeed, the large troop movements and the improvement and variety of tactics at the time required that commanders in the rear be able to signal their troops during a battle.
