Large Pediment Mirror, 19th-Century Glass, Louis XVI Style, Napoleon III Period, with Rich Polychrome Decoration
Louis XVI style mirror, Napoleon III period, second half of the 19th century. French work.
Rectangular frame in wood and gilt and polychrome stucco, with an arched mirror plate in the upper section. Rich relief decoration in a refined harmony of gilt, cream, and celadon green, creating a highly decorative effect. The pediment is crowned with a bouquet of roses and small flowers, supported by a quiver and a flaming torch, tied together with a ribbon bow and laurel branches — a characteristic neoclassical repertoire.
The frame is adorned on the outer edge with a frieze of scrolling foliage, surrounding broad panels decorated with a lozenge trellis pattern punctuated by gilt rosettes on a celadon green ground. A gilt beaded border highlights the perimeter of the mirror plate. The lower corners are embellished with two scrolling foliate motifs in the manner of acanthus-leaf consoles.
The original silvered mirror plate displays a fine, even network of age craquelure, which in no way impairs the reflection and lends the piece all the charm of an authentic antique patina. The reverse is made of softwood planks.
Good overall condition for a piece of this age. The gilding shows expected wear from use. The pediment is later attached and shows slight fragility at the joint, requiring careful handling.
