15th-century Sandstone Imp Head On A Base
A superbly patinated 15th-century sandstone console head depicting a goblin. An incredibly unique and grotesque figure, with distinctive hollow ears, blurred and altered eyes and nose, above a small, circular mouth. In folklore, imps were small, demonic creatures, known for spreading mischief and chaos. Originating from the north of England, this piece has an old fixing hole on the reverse, indicating that it was originally mounted on a wall. The grotesque face shows traces of blackening due to industrial exposure over the centuries. Presented on a contemporary metal plinth.
