Pierre Prins 1838-1913...large Impressionist Pastel...lively Landscape Near Triel-sur-seine

Artist: Pierre Prins (1838-1913)
A large and beautiful Impressionist pastel from 1887, depicting a luminous and lively landscape in the countryside near Triel-sur-Seine in the Paris region... The work is signed by the painter Pierre Prins (1838-1913), to whom the Bénézit dictionary devotes a long chapter and whose biography can be found on Wikipedia. Even before the beginnings of Impressionism, Pierre Prins was a close friend of Édouard Manet, as both artists moved in Parisian musical circles through their wives, each a musician. Suzanne Manet (pianist) was a friend of Fanny Claus (violinist, Prins' wife), who posed alongside Berthe Morisot in Manet's famous painting "The Balcony," exhibited at the Salon of 1869. Note: Pierre Prins was a regular at the famous Café Guerbois, a meeting place for the Impressionists, and became friends with the leading artists of the time, notably Alfred Sisley. Wikipedia states that Pierre Prins should have been part of the first Impressionist exhibition held at the photographer Nadar's studio, but the twelve paintings he entrusted to his friend, the sculptor Emile Scaillet (1846-1911), were overlooked by the latter. Values & Auctions: The value of this painter's works has remained very affordable compared to other Impressionists of his generation. His pastels depicting landscapes of the Paris region achieved his highest auction prices, with four results exceeding €7,000 (including fees). Beyond these record prices, there are over fifty results between €2,000 and €5,900 (source: Art-Price). It should be noted that his pastels are as sought after as his paintings, as evidenced by the list of museums that hold his works (see Wikipedia). This pastel comes from the "Pierre Prins" exhibition held in 1955 at the Jean de Ruaz Gallery in Paris. Listed under number 551 in the artist's general catalogue of works / see last photo.
