Large Biblical Painting 17th Century...vision Of St. Anthony Of Padua...murillo & The Spanish School?
Artist: Ecole Espagnole ?
Large and beautiful biblical canvas from the 17th century which represents Saint Anthony of Padua in the company of the infant Jesus, in a posture and with the attributes typical of his vision...According to Christian belief, Saint Anthony of Padua took refuge in the Italian town of Camposampiero in order to devote himself to prayer...It was there, in a cell specially arranged for him, that the count who welcomed him had a mystical vision when he saw "Saint Anthony in ecstasy holding the infant Jesus in his arms"... - Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the most famous figures of Christianity. Born in Lisbon, he spent a large part of his life as a preacher, having a real talent as an orator. After a stay in Morocco, he met in Sicily "Saint Francis of Assisi" who sent him to preach in France and Italy - note: the canvas offered here is not signed but its beautiful quality suggests the presence of a good artist, probably a painter of the Spanish school: we find here the sobriety and the chromatism of certain Spanish artists of the Golden Age, in particular the posture of the Saint which recalls the manner of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682)... one of the attractions of this canvas is that it does not refer to any known composition, which gives it a relative rarity - - note some old repaintings (rather clumsy, located on the cassock and in the background of the canvas) made by someone who was obviously not in the profession / see last shots - quite basic to correct ... canvas size :61 cm x 44 cm Old frame (shocks): 71 cm x 55 cm - ask me for other photos if necessary -
