The Artist’s World
Fragments d’intime ®
Originally from Istanbul, Albert Bitran (1931–2018) abandoned his architecture studies in Paris in 1951 to pursue the freedom of painting.
Under the influence of Charles Estienne, he quickly moved away from the geometric rigor he deemed “too dry,” in search of “more truth.”
His work then became a poetic exploration in which black—a deep-rooted legacy of his Ottoman culture—structures the space. Unbound by any movement, he built a body of work of great singularity, imbued with the movement of grays and ochres and a persistent memory of the figurative.
The Work Under the Magnifying Glass ®
This mixed-media work on paper reveals a tension between abstraction and rigorous construction, a direct legacy of Albert Bitran’s training as an architect.
The composition is organized around a dense central core from which oblique and fragmented forms radiate, evoking a timber-framed, almost mechanical structure. Kraft paper (used in collage) serves here as a building material, imparting a fibrous and organic texture that interacts with the layers of acrylic.
Through strategic use of negative space and selective removal, Bitran allows the fibrous texture of the substrate to emerge, creating a mineral-like depth without saturation. The dominant diagonals establish a powerful dynamism, while the palette of ochres and blacks structures the space. The light areas, skillfully placed, offer a chromatic respite that balances the density of the dark masses.
Public Collections
Albert Bitran’s artistic career enjoys established institutional recognition, confirming his place among the leading figures of art in the second half of the 20th century.
His work is included in the permanent collections of national and international institutions. This presence in public collections anchors his body of work within a lasting cultural heritage.
