A major work from Béatrice Bescond's Parisian period, Buddha is distinguished by its monumental composition, where cultural memory, imaginary architecture, and archetypal figures intertwine. Created in 1988, this acrylic on canvas already demonstrates the singularity of the visual language developed by the artist around the phenomena of perception, appearance, and disappearance of forms.

The pictorial surface is structured by a dense network of graphic writing, signs, pseudo-letters, and architectural fragments that evoke ancient civilizations, imaginary vestiges, and forgotten systems of thought. This teeming background, traversed by luminous vibrations and scriptural rhythms, generates a shifting space in which the gaze constantly wanders.

On this framework, figures created through imprints appear, using a technique characteristic of the artist: characters, animals, angels, musicians, griffins, and bulls emerge and then dissolve into the graphic fabric of the composition. These improbable iconographic encounters establish a syncretic universe where Western and Eastern references, ancient mythologies, and contemporary imaginaries intersect. The work offers no closed narrative; on the contrary, it invites the viewer to construct their own story from the signs they recognize and the associations they project.
Beneath this apparent profusion lies a rigorous geometric construction. The composition rests on the articulation of fundamental forms, square, circle, and triangle, which refer to the classical tradition of harmony and the legacy of Renaissance thought. An equilateral triangle discreetly structures the central space of the canvas. Supported by the lower frieze composed of prints of greyhounds in motion, it introduces a dynamic that disrupts the stability of the square format. In negative space, this device brings forth a Buddha figure, perceptible as a luminous apparition at the heart of the composition.

At the center, the main silhouette is also inspired by the famous Seated Scribe in the Louvre, whose harmonious proportions are inscribed within this triangular geometry. Between presence and effacement, revelation and dissolution, the figure gradually takes shape in the viewer's gaze, illustrating Béatrice Bescond's research on perceptual mechanisms and the mental construction of the image.
Influenced by mythologies, spiritual traditions, and the writings of Gaston Bachelard and Carl Gustav Jung, the artist develops a body of work where intuition and reflection on the history of representation converge. Her labyrinthine compositions, reminiscent in some ways of the worlds of Pavel Filonov, Henri Michaux, or François Rouan, transform painting into a field of visual experiences where forms continually metamorphose in a vibrant flow.
