Buffet With Two Regency Bodies From The 18th Century

So-called “Régence” Buffet - France, first half of the 18th century (circa 1715–1730)France, first half of the 18th century (circa 1715–1730) Carved oak.

This solid oak buffet is representative of French furniture production of the Régence period, a stylistic transition between the reign of Louis XIV and the emergence of the Louis XV style. It is characterized by restrained elegance, softened lines, and carved ornamentation that remains structured while already enlivened by curvilinear forms.

The façade is composed of two superimposed tiers opening through four doors with molded and carved panels, featuring shaped profiles emphasized by raised moldings. The panels display flowing, contoured outlines typical of the Régence vocabulary, while the rails are animated by discreet yet refined carved motifs.

The rounded uprights, richly molded and carved, enhance the verticality of the piece while softening its architectural structure. The sides, with recessed paneled rails, reflect the care given to all visible surfaces of the cabinet, confirming its intended placement in a refined interior.

The upper section is crowned with a straight molded cornice, modestly projecting, which still asserts the classical heritage of the 17th century. The lower section rests on a molded plinth (known as à plainte), ensuring both visual stability and structural solidity.

A notable feature is the presence of a concealed sliding shelf, serving as a secret drawer, integrated between the two tiers. This device, frequently found in high-quality furniture, attests to sophisticated domestic use and a high level of craftsmanship.

The interior, in solid wood, retains its three shelves, displaying an even and authentic old patina. The piece is accompanied by two keys, consistent with the period ironwork, with finely worked escutcheons and handles.

All ornamentation is original, and the buffet has undergone earlier restorations carried out with respect for its structure and historical character. The overall condition is considered very good, with an attractive oak patina, wear consistent with age and use, and excellent stylistic readability.

The piece originates from a listed château in the Deux-Sèvres region, which further enhances its historical and heritage interest.
