18th Century Louis XVI Fireplace Trumeau

Louis XVI overmantel mirror. France, late 18th, early 19th century. Carved woodwork lacquered and gilded wood. Oil on canvas mounted on canvas, minor restorations to be expected, later mirror. Dimensions: height 170 cm width 99 cm.

Important carved and moulded wooden trumeau, characteristic of the Louis XVI style and of aristocratic interior decoration in the late 18th century. Executed in wood painted in an elegant grey-green tone, it is enriched with partially gilded highlights that subtly emphasize the relief and architectural structure of the ensemble. The strictly symmetrical composition is articulated through a Neoclassical vocabulary: vertical uprights accented with straight mouldings, and panels framed by shaped cartouches and sculpted ornament. The finely carved decoration combines stylized foliage, classical amphorae, and tied ribbons, emblematic motifs of the Louis XVI taste, reflecting a renewed interest in Antiquity tempered by refined decorative restraint. The upper section is fitted with an oil on canvas depicting a male figure accompanied by a dog and dove, set within an idealized lakeside landscape. This pastoral scene, imbued with serenity and balance, fully reflects the Arcadian aesthetic of the 18th century, in which human figures, nature, and animals are harmoniously combined in a poetic, contemplative atmosphere. The soft handling of light and muted palette reinforce the bucolic and intimate character of the composition. The lower section contains a rectangular mirror, inserted at a later date, enhancing the decorative and luminous function of the piece. It integrates harmoniously with the original structure, extending the traditional role of the trumeau as an architectural and ornamental element above fireplaces and along wall elevations. A representative example of French craftsmanship from the second half of the 18th century, this trumeau is in very good overall condition. The original polychromy and gilding remain clearly legible, attesting to the quality of the materials and the care devoted to its execution.
