Provençal Sauteuse Chest Of Drawers
Provençal “sauteuse” chest of drawers - France, Provence, mid-18th century - Louis XV period.
A sauteuse chest of drawers in solid walnut, characteristic of Provençal production during the Louis XV period. It features a bombe-shaped façade opening onto two wide superimposed drawers, each adorned with shaped panels carved with scrolls and rocaille motifs, reflecting the influence of Rococo decorative vocabulary adapted to regional taste.
The top, made from a single piece of walnut, is serpentine in form and finished with a molded bec de corbin edge, enhancing the elegance of the overall silhouette. The lower rail, richly carved, displays a naturalistic decoration of flowering branches, foliage, and fruit, motifs frequently encountered in 18th-century Provençal cabinetry, evoking abundance and a close connection to the rural world.
The side uprights are rounded and extend into gracefully curved legs, giving the piece a supple and well-balanced line. The original gilt-bronze mounts include finely chased escutcheons and handles, harmoniously integrated into the decorative composition. The locks are original and accompanied by their period key.
The interiors of the drawers are lined with high-quality floral fabric, attesting to the decorative care given even to the unseen parts of the piece. The chest has undergone earlier restorations respectful of its structure and materials and is now presented in very good overall condition.
This chest of drawers aptly illustrates the craftsmanship of 18th-century Provençal workshops, combining technical mastery, decorative richness, and a regional interpretation of the Louis XV style.
