Large Canton porcelain bowl. Famille rose – Guangxu period (1875-1908), Qing Dynasty.

Large fine porcelain bowl with polychrome decoration, richly adorned using the famille rose (fencai) technique. The center depicts a lively court scene, featuring figures dressed in long robes in shades of pink, turquoise, and celadon green, against a finely rendered architectural and landscape backdrop.

The composition is punctuated by alternating cartouches adorned with floral bouquets, symbolic fruits, birds, and butterflies, framed by gilded Greek friezes punctuated by geometric motifs in reserve. The rim of the bowl features a profuse decoration of flowers, stylized phoenixes, and vegetal scrolls on a gold ground, testifying to the refinement and virtuosity of the Canton workshops at the end of the 19th century.

On the exterior body, a few delicate bouquets of peonies and butterflies balance the composition. The reverse bears traces of an old, carefully executed staple restoration, consolidating a crack without breaking, a testament to the care taken to preserve this precious piece.

This dish elegantly illustrates the rich iconography and quality of execution of Canton porcelain intended for export during the reign of Emperor Guangxu, a flourishing period of the Qing Dynasty.
