Regency Chest Of Drawers 18th Century French Provincial Work
Walnut chest of drawers, Regency period (circa 1725-1735). Provincial work.
Imposing solid walnut chest of drawers featuring a curved front with three wide, molded drawers, separated by exposed crosspieces. The straight, rounded uprights are decorated with vertical fluting extending to the feet, giving the whole an elegant balance between architectural vigor and ornamental refinement. It rests on a low apron with a finely carved, curved apron.
The single-piece walnut top, finished with a subtle bec de corbin bird's-beak molding, surmounts the piece and showcases fine regional craftsmanship, likely from the Southwest or the Dauphiné. The gilt-bronze escutcheons and drawer pulls, featuring opposing chinoiserie figures, reflect the taste for exoticism characteristic of the Régence period. Ornaments date from both the 18th and 19th centuries. There is wear to the gilding consistent with use. Dovetail joints, visible on the sides of the drawers, confirm the piece's period construction.
Antique restoration on the frame and top, the back redone at a later date. Good overall condition, with a beautiful warm and deep walnut patina.
Dimensions: Height: 85 cm - Width: 128 cm - Depth: 58 cm.
Certificate of authenticity. International delivery available.
