Ernst Bott, known as Francis Bott, was a German painter of the Second School of Paris, born in 1904 in Frankfurt am Main and died in 1998 in Lugano. As a teenager, he led a nomadic life, moving between Berlin, the United States, Mexico, and Austria. He met the Austrian Expressionist Oskar Kokoshka in Prague in the early 1930s, who encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. He then turned to Surrealism, encouraged by Francis Picabia, and participated in the 1947 International Surrealist Exhibition at the Maeght Gallery. However, he quickly distanced himself from Surrealism to devote himself to abstraction. Beginning in the 1950s, he developed a personal technique that involved applying clumps of paint to the canvas with a palette knife, bringing his work closer to the Tachist style.
