Francis Morton Johnson (1878-1931) Seaside in Brittany Oil on canvas, signed 65 x 81 cm
Like many American painters of his generation, Francis Morton Johnson (1878-1931) left his native Massachusetts to complete his artistic training in Paris. There he enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. Making his debut at the Salon d'Automne in 1907, he joined the Salon des Indépendants the following year, which led to the acquisition of one of his still lifes by the French state. He remained loyal to this exhibition, which brought him good fortune, until the eve of the First World War.
