About the artist : Robert Müller (1920–2003), a Swiss sculptor, draftsman, and engraver, was among the pioneers of iron sculpture in the 1950s and 1960s.
Trained by Germaine Richier and Otto Bänninger, he settled in Paris in 1949 and developed a personal style, between abstraction and figuration, where expressive tension is accompanied by a latent sensuality.
Represented by the Galerie Jeanne Bucher from 1954, he participated in major international exhibitions, from the Venice Biennale to Documenta in Kassel.
From the 1970s onward, weakened by his health, he abandoned sculpture to devote himself to drawing and engraving, which would later be the subject of retrospectives in Geneva. Settling in Villiers-le-Bel, he worked there until his death in 2003, leaving behind a major body of work in modern sculpture.
RegaTrding the work : he work presented here, Forme (Form), circa 1965–1968, is striking for the strength and density of its ink. It combines the stability of a constructed and massive form with a pronounced modernity, the antithesis of the finesse and elegance of the underlying typeface.
One can discern in it a desire to create tension between sign and meaning, between the legible and the illegible. Through its verticality and presence, the form seems to seek to establish itself in space.
