The artist's world
Fragments d'intime ®
Zhang Hua (1898-1970) began with a classical approach in China, where he taught painting before traveling the world.
Early works are resolutely figurative: during his stay in Canada, he paints still lifes and landscapes, then depicts the verticality of buildings in New York. This academic period testifies to an eye attentive to the reality of the places he travels through.
Arrived in Paris, he settled in Montparnasse and lived the simplicity of bohemia. He worked as a framer to earn a living, an activity that brought him into close contact with the great masters of the first Paris School: he rubbed shoulders with Chagall and Van Dongen.
In the 50s, his style changed radically. He abandons figuration for an abstraction that is first structured, then distinctly more lyrical. His hand then becomes the instrument of his unconscious, expressing his impulses through a liberated gesture where color and movement take precedence over form.
His latest canvases, exploded and instinctive, tell the story of a man at the crossroads of worlds, seeking his own trace between the calligraphy of his ancestors and the raw energy of the West.
L'œuvre à la loupe ®
Dominated by the dripping technique, the work explores primary colors(blue, yellow, red) that intertwine with raw energy. A symbiosis between Western gestural abstraction and Chinese pictorial heritage. Beneath this apparent chaos, thick black strokes recall the structure of traditional calligraphy, serving as the composition's skeleton.
The layering creates a visual depth wherewhite and black balance the vividness of the splashes. This painting seeks to capture the pure movement and emotion of the creative moment. It is a dynamic dialogue between ancient ink and contemporary abstract expressionism.
The artist's signature, accompanied by his typical red seal, anchors this modernity in a strong cultural identity. Emblematic of East Asia, this seal indicates that the artist also lays claim to his roots.
