About the artist : A proponent of abstraction since 1950, Jean Miotte's work lies at the confluence of Art Informel, Tachisme, and lyrical abstraction.
His painting, free and instinctive, rejects sketching in favor of intuition and inner expression. His style, which critic Jean-Clarence Lambert describes as "choreographic abstraction," draws on elective affinities with the world of dance (Zizi Jeanmaire, Rosella Hightower).

His career is marked by key milestones: after his debut at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles (1953-1963), he received a grant from the Ford Foundation. This stay in the United States allowed him to associate with Rothko, Calder, and Lipchitz.
His art then evolved from the graphic style of the 1960s towards a more understated approach on ecru canvas or kraft paper, placing movement and color at the heart of his artistic exploration.

An international artist, he established his studio in Hamburg in 1972 and has exhibited extensively in the world's leading museums (Guggenheim, MoMA, Paris). A pioneer, he was the first Western painter to exhibit in Beijing after the Mao era in 1980. In 2002, he crowned his career by creating his own foundation in New York, now based in Fribourg.

About the work : Created with gouache on Arches paper, this work is characterized by broad brushstrokes, a warm palette of reds, browns, and blacks, and a great expressive vitality.

The movement, spontaneity and balance of forms perfectly reflect the artist's unique gestural sensibility.

A work of great intensity, a perfect testament to Jean Miotte's major contribution to post-war abstract art.
