Rare Double Fly Box, Carved Corozo Nut, Integrated Mirrors, Folk Art, Circa 1820
A cute tiny item that will delight your display cases and collections! A rare double fly box, carved from Corozo nut. Made in several parts and hinged, it comprises two compartments. Each lid is decorated on the outside with high-quality openwork. On one side, an allegory of music bordered by foliage; on the other, a flowerpot framed by the same stylized foliage. Inside, each compartment contains a small period mirror for applying the fly. The shuttle-shaped body of the item is finely engraved with leaves and geometric shapes. A Corozo ring, for hanging or securing, is located between the two compartments, and a stylized foot supports the entire piece. A very high-quality example of folk art, commonly associated with convicts or sailors.
Excellent condition, no breaks or major flaws. Just a tiny chip on one of the interior mirrors.
Working made by a sailor or convict, dating from the first part of the 19th century, circa 1820.
Dimensions: 10.5cm x 3cm x 4cm H.
