Papier-mâché Figurines, Italy, 19th Century
A pair of statuettes depicting a fisherman and a washerwoman. Southern Italy, likely from the Lecce region in Puglia. 19th century. For economic reasons, this craft—which involves using papier-mâché (wet paper molded over a carved wooden or terracotta frame, then painted)—emerged in the Middle Ages and reached its peak from the 17th to the 19th centuries. These two fragile figures, typical of folk art, have not survived to the present day without some signs of wear and a missing part (a basket?). Period patina. They have retained all the charm of this Italian art form.
