Wrought-iron Candlestick On A Turned Wooden Base, Marked "c R," 19th Century Candlestick
An interesting antique 19th-century cellar lamp, part of the family of candlesticks, candelabras, and torches traditionally used in cellars and vineyards.
It consists of a vertical wrought-iron cage, inside which a movable holder slides to hold a candle. This mechanism allowed the height of the flame to be adjusted as the candle burned.
The piece rests on an elegant turned wooden base, featuring a lovely antique patina and the characteristic turning work of traditional craftsmanship.
The wrought iron also retains a beautiful dark patina, attesting to its age and use.
An interesting detail: the base bears an old marking consisting of the letters C R, which could correspond to the initials of a winery or estate, possibly located in Champagne or Burgundy.
This hypothesis naturally remains to be confirmed, as the precise identification of the estate of origin has not yet been established.
This type of utilitarian light fixture was used to illuminate cellars, particularly during work related to the preservation and handling of wines.
Today, these objects serve as fascinating testaments to France’s winemaking heritage, prized for their authentic character and the ingenious simplicity of their design.
In very good overall condition, with a lovely antique patina on both the wood and the iron. The piece exhibits a beautiful uniformity and retains all the charm of a 19th-century utilitarian object.
