Christofle X Oscar Roty: Six Solid Silver And Vermeil Spoons, Universal Exhibition 1900
Artist: Oscar Roty Pour Christofle
A very rare set of spoons made by Christofle for the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
The spoons are made of silver, with the inside of the bowls plated in gilt silver.
The spatulas are decorated on the front with the Genius of Art seated on a stone in a natural setting.
On the back, an antique-style design depicts the Parthenon, along with a pelike and a kylix resting on an Ionic column.
The little owl of Athena is depicted on the back of the bowl, perched on a laurel branch.
The design of these spoons was created by Oscar Roty (1846-1911), the renowned medalist and plaque artist known for the famous Sower motif that adorned the French francs from 1898 onwards. These spoons were sold by Christofle as souvenirs at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
The decoration is highly detailed and exquisitely refined, with a true depth that reveals the sculptor's genius. Each spoon is hallmarked:
Minerva 1st standard mark (pre-1973) for 950/1000 silver
Maker's mark: CC with a bee and three stars for Christofle et Compagnie, a hallmark used between 1853 and 1935.
These magnificent spoons, extremely rare in a set of six, are remarkable for the beauty of their decoration, the prestige of their creator, and their historical significance linked to the famous Universal Exhibitions that brought glory to France.
