Ga Scheid: Large Box Or Casket In Sterling Silver Niello And Vermeil. Austria 19th Niel, Gas

Superb and rare large box in niello silver by the famous goldsmith Georg Adam Scheid.

The box is square, the lid has a curved edge.
The sides of the box as well as the curved parts of the lid have a decoration made of a regular alternation of niello lines or silver left in reserve.

Georg Adam Scheid's niello silver boxes are rare and are even more so with their large dimensions.

Niel is a technique which consists of filling the engravings of an object with silver sulphide. Niel has a very dark gray finish with a very soft metallic reflection.

The top of the lid is silver, enhanced with a superb number (LMR) engraved in a style typical of the Viennese Secession.

The inside of the box is vermeil.

. 900: hallmark for the title of the silver
. Head of Diana in a hexagon: hallmark for Austrian silver of 900/°°
. Badly struck square punch to identify

. GL in an oval with a different one to identify: probably the hallmark of the French importer reseller
. Weevil: posterior French import mark
