Subscriber's Item: 18th-century Solid Silver Tulip-shaped Goblet. French Province.
A charming 18th-century tulip-shaped timbale made of solid silver, notable for bearing the hallmarks of a registered master silversmith.
The timbale rests on a fluted pedestal; the body is plain, and the rim is accented with fillets.
The goblet is hallmarked three times with the mark of the registered master silversmith, which is yet to be identified:
. NJ with a hand (?) or a bouquet (?) surmounted by a fleur-de-lis.
Goldsmiths who did not work near a hallmark office to have their pieces hallmarked had the option of affixing their own goldsmith’s mark three times in place of the usual “fermiers généraux” hallmarks. They paid the required fees as a lump sum.
The works of master artisans are therefore necessarily provincial objects, originating from small centers with limited production.
