The miniature is rectangular and depicts a man's bust, facing forward. He is wearing a large blue coat, a shirt with sagging tails, and a silk tie.
This portrait is very finely painted, with detail and precision, in the style and taste of the very early 19th century. On the reverse, his hair is braided.
The miniature and the hair composition are in a hinged gold frame secured with a tiny gold padlock. A chain holds the key to this padlock. The latter is perfectly functional, a small marvel of precision.
Behind this padlock lies the symbolism of the loved one whose portrait and memory are preciously preserved by being "locked up." The hair on the reverse side is most likely that of the man portrayed and that of his wife and/or children.
