The ewer rests on three feet joined to the body by scrolled cartouches.
The handle is made of blackened wood.
The bulbous body is made of plain silver engraved with the monogram AR.
According to the tradition of the family from which the ewer comes, the monogram AR is that of Albert Rostand (1818-1891), founder of the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes shipping company in 1851.
The ewer is hallmarked:
Minerva 1st standard mark, pre-1973, for 950/1000 silver
Maker's mark: PQ with a double oar in the antique style for Pierre-François Queillé II, active from 1834 to 1846
Examination of the hallmarks allows us to date these ewers between 1838 and 1846, during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. This corresponds to the number assigned.
