A La Volupté: Romantic Allegorical Miniature Of A Putto Sleeping In A Cup. Gold And Metal

Adorable miniature on strong paper or cardboard dating from the end of the 18th or the very beginning of the 19th century.

The miniature is very finely painted, it represents a putto sleeping in a crystal cup mounted on a gilded bronze foot. This improvised bed rests on an architectural terrace in a flower garden environment.

It is captioned in the exergue: "a la volupté".

This miniature is an allegory of the intoxication of love represented by this little love in a wine glass.

The drawing is of quality, very soft with a mastery of the transparency of the glass, the representation of love or even the vegetation in the background.

The miniature is unfortunately not signed but is certainly the work of a talented miniaturist.

It is presented in a dented and damaged gilded metal frame at the top. The bail was restored later and is made of gold.

Magnificent miniature with a charming allegorical representation rarely represented. We find it, for example, with an oil on paper painted by Abraham Woodside, kept at the museum of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
