18th Century Solid Silver Twisted Stew Fork! 18th Century Serving Set

An exceptional and rare 18th-century silver stew fork with a striking twisted decoration.

The fork is generously sized and very heavy.

It features a very rare and surprising twisted stem, a decorative motif seldom seen in silverware, especially from the late 18th century.

This decoration is original, as evidenced by the position of the hallmarks at the base of the tines. Furthermore, if the fork were to be virtually straightened, the curve of the blade would be reversed, demonstrating that the entire design was planned and conceived from the outset.

The blade is engraved JP, likely the initial of the first owner.

It bears the following hallmarks:

A silversmith's mark, barely legible, which I have been unable to identify. Subject to verification: a J and a question mark with a small flower and a crown.

Guild mark: P with the year 89.

Charge mark, barely legible but normally an A in a circle.

Discharge mark: oak leaf.

Later hallmark for 950/1000 silver used in the departments between 1818 and 1838.

Later hallmark for large guarantee from the same period for the Lyon office (number 67).

The hallmarks from 1789 were actually used a few years later, until 1798.

This is a superb piece, solid with a substantial weight; the piece is thick, especially at the tines.

This twisted shank makes this piece unique, all the more so on a stew fork, which is one of the rarest serving pieces in 18th-century silverware.

Stewing forks are infinitely rarer than spoons, making this a magnificent collector's item not to be missed!

This is a true rarity and curiosity in 18th-century silverware production. It is likely a unique piece. I have found no equivalent from that period.
