The mirror is square with canted sides. It is guilloché-patterned with small wavelets, and the lid is enameled in a magnificent, unusual sea green. The center is set with a stone, probably hematite.
The interior reveals a polished metal mirror and a silver-gilt pocket for a powder puff.
The case is hallmarked:
. Lion passant for English sterling silver
. An anchor for the city of Birmingham
. The date letter M for the year 1936-1937
. Silversmith's mark HCD for Henry Clifford Davis.
The first hallmark for Henry Clifford Davis was registered in 1901. After the First World War, the firm became known for its production of small enameled objects, particularly powder compacts.
This powder compact is a fine example of his production, featuring a rare pale green enamel that is rarely seen, enhanced by this central setting.
