Fly Box In Silver And Stingray, The Lid Painted With A Miniature. 19th Century, Louis-philippe
Very beautiful and unusual fly box, completely lined with stingray, mounted in silver and painted with a miniature. It dates from the 19th century, probably from the reign of Louis Philippe.
The box is rectangular, the hinged lid is decorated with a painted miniature scene (on cardboard?) representing a rural landscape with a woman drawing water, in the foreground is a dog, symbol of fidelity.
The structure of the box is made of strong cardboard, it is entirely sheathed in green shagreen with small grains.
The box is mounted in silver, with a frame on the lid, at the base and at the level of the opening.
The inside of the box reveals, classically, a large compartment for the brush and two smaller ones for the flies. The latter being closed by two small flaps and money.
The lid is lined with a mirror embellished with a frieze of glued embossed paper.
The box is stamped:
. Goldsmith's hallmark that I have not been able to identify: LA with a sheaf of wheat or perhaps a tanned skin (??)
. Boar's head hallmark, for solid silver, in use since 1838
Superb box, beautiful late copy of the return to fashion of these flies after the revolution. The use of materials such as shagreen and silver as well as the painted cover of a miniature make it a rare and precious object.
5.8 x 4.4cm
3.3cm tall
50.5 grams
Very good state. A few tiny stingray accidents, silver oxidation.
